Wild Rumpus presents a concert of hard grooves and surreal storytelling, featuring the original marionettes and puppetry of artist Niki Ulehla, at San Francisco Conservatory of Music’s Osher Salon on Friday May 31st at 8pm. David Lang’s Lying, Cheating, Stealing churns out a funk made up of sharp corners and sinister shadow. Lois Vierk’s Demon Star continues the groovy vibe in a more playful vein, pairing cello and marimba in a tour-de-force duet. The Little Fix, Gyorgy Kurtag’s trio for the unorthodox combination of piccolo, trombone, and guitar, is an enigmatic tribute to the folk-inspired music of Stravinsky and Bartok, spinning a strange tale in its four short movements.
We resume our collaboration with artist and puppeteer Niki Ulehla with two scenes taken from the Russian tale Vasilisa the Beautiful and Baba Yaga. Ulehla’s marionettes and puppeteering, live-projected on screen, will be accompanied by original incidental music by composers Christopher Pratorius and David Coll.
